Earlier in the year Climate Africa was part of the advisory team that made recommendations to the South African government regarding methods of structuring a carbon tax. The South African government has received these recommendations and is currently in the process of finalising its carbon tax policy. While passing legislation is a slow and cumbersome procedure, it seems that the tax may already be announced in the 2012 budget.

The tax is designed to incentivise adopt companies to remain internationally competitive by adopting serious carbon reduction plans. South Africa relies heavily on coal power plants, and with diminishing capacity, a carbon tax will be one of a number of strategies to reduce the burden on Eskom.

So, get into action, measure your emissions, cut costs, and be prepared for the carbon tax when it arrives!
